Description

Staples Apples traces back to Audrey and Richard Staples, whose family history on the Mornington Peninsula reaches into the late 1800s, with son Glenn now working the orchard alongside them. Richard purchased the Roberts Road property around sixty years ago, and after travelling through Europe and the United States, the couple introduced close planting techniques that lifted the orchard's fruit quality significantly. Netting now covers the trees completely, protecting the crop from hail damage and sunburn, a change the family credits with much of the orchard's ongoing success. Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady and Golden Delicious apples grow alongside newer varieties, sold from the farm gate stand from March through to January. Cherries follow a much shorter window, available from mid-December to early January when the fruit is ready, with sweet varieties including Lapins, Merchant and Van. Picking is not offered as a pick-your-own activity, so all fruit is sold directly from the packing shed. Harvest season brings pickers from a wide range of backgrounds to work the orchard, giving the property a genuinely international character each year even as it stays rooted in family history. Social media accounts under the Staples Apples name keep customers updated on packing shed hours, as the schedule shifts across the growing season.
