Torello Farm was taken over in 2016 by three Brancatisano brothers and their partners, an Italian family with generations of fruit and vegetable growing behind them, who found eleven hectares of neglected market gardens infested with blackberries and littered with old car shells. Within a year they'd cleared the land and opened a farm gate shop, named Torello as a nod to their grandparents' Italian heritage. The property now grows a diverse, ever-changing range of specialty potatoes, heirloom vegetables and tree-ripened fruit, supplemented by produce from around 80 other Peninsula growers, many of whom lack their own outlet to sell direct to customers. Belted Galloway beef and Dorset Down lamb are raised on the family's Tuerong property, chosen specifically as slow-growing heritage breeds prized for flavour, and processed nose to tail each week. In-house preserves, pickles and condiments line the shelves alongside the fresh produce, and the farm operates as plastic-free, using compostable punnets. Food miles run to around 75 metres from field to shelf, so produce picked that morning can be on the shelf by noon. The farm gate shop trades seven days a week from 8am to 6pm, closed public holidays. A library of seasonal recipes on the farm website gives home cooks ideas for whatever produce happens to be freshest that week.
