Daniel's Run Farm sits at the end of a long gravel driveway off Coolart Road in Tyabb, a seven-hectare property that Cheryl McGaffin bought in 1995 as neglected bushland overrun with blackberries. Close to thirty years on, she has planted more than 160,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses and created a wetland on what is now a year-round creek, turning the farm into as much a regeneration project as a tomato business. Within that revegetated bush, Cheryl grows over 200 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, some of them natural crossbreeds that evolved on the property itself, with names like Alice's Dream, Conqueror of Hearts and Noir de Crime. Organic principles run through every stage: beds are built up with compost and her own horse manure rather than tilled, green manure crops of flowers, herbs and brassicas prepare the soil, and climbing beans follow the tomato season to fix nutrients back into the ground. The surrounding bush also doubles as habitat for the birds that help with the farm's integrated pest management. Tomatoes are grown from December through May, vine-ripened and left to fully sun-ripen rather than picked early, giving them a depth of flavour and a colour range spanning deep green through purple, orange and red. The tomatoes have picked up industry awards and supply a number of Melbourne and Peninsula kitchens directly from the farm.
