Itali.co occupies a heritage building on the Esplanade in Sorrento originally built in 1876 by John Boswell Clark as the Mornington Hotel, named after the Earl of Mornington. The Clark family ran it as a hotel until 1952, and after restoration in 2001, Itali.co took over the site in 2014, giving the restaurant a genuinely historic Peninsula address. Owner Marco Di Pietrantonio, known for South Yarra's long-running Pinocchio's and more than 30 years in the industry, built the menu around themes of Italy's shepherds, farmers and artisans, expressed through stone-baked pizzas, seasonal antipasti and handmade pasta. Dishes range from classic Margherita and Napoletana pizzas to more considered options like a white truffle cream pizza with mushrooms and parmesan, alongside seafood, meat and pasta mains. The building's position on the Esplanade gives diners a chance at beach views from the right-hand side of the restaurant, and both indoor and outdoor terrace seating overlook Port Phillip Bay. Beyond regular dining, Itali.co caters birthdays, corporate events, Christmas parties and casual get-togethers, using its heritage function space for private bookings. Open daily, with extended Sunday hours from morning into late, Itali.co suits family dinners, first dates and Peninsula visitors after authentic Italian food in one of Sorrento's more historically significant buildings.
