The Grounds of the City is the CBD sibling of The Grounds of Alexandria, opened by the same team, a genuinely photogenic Sydney cafe in its own right. Design firm Acme & Co. built the space around a detailed 1920s aesthetic, with intricate timber joinery, antique crockery and furniture, cast-enamel doors, custom stained-glass windows and copper bar equipment, right down to a permanent coffee sommelier and staff dressed in old-fashioned uniforms. Tea arrives by trolley, mobile shoe-shiners work the floor, and a 1920s jazz soundtrack rounds out the immersive detail. The all-day menu runs from breakfast, served until 11:30am, through to lunch and dinner, with dishes spanning coffee-tasting platters and house cakes to dashi oysters, burgers, steak and half a roast chicken with parmesan fries. Afternoon tea is available for anyone wanting a more formal sit-down, and the venue hosts private functions and group bookings for larger parties. Groups of up to five can book online, with walk-ins always welcome, while larger group bookings go through a dedicated phone line. Located in The Galeries on George Street, it puts old-world Sydney charm right in the middle of the CBD's daily foot traffic. The venue is fully licensed, with a cocktail list to match the food menu, and dine-at-the-bar seating available for anyone after a quicker, more casual visit.
