It was early 1985 when Mario’s family decided to open a Takeaway Pizzeria called La Nuova on Edwin Street Croydon.
Mario was 19 years of age studying Commerce / Marketing at UNSW. He had grown up working in the family fruit and vegetable shop. It was here that Mario developed his passion for personal customer service and learnt the importance of quality fresh produce.
After 5 years at La Nuova Pizzeria, Mario took off to see the 1990 World Cup in Italy (football being his other passion). For nine months he travelled around Italy honing his pizzaiolo skills in various regions, and when he returned, Mario had his own ideas.
In 1993 the family offered Mario the business and the name was changed to Mario’s Pizzeria. Over the years the Takeaway shop has transformed into a 160 seat Italian Pizzeria Restaurant.
Today Mario’s is considered Croydon’s premier local pizzeria, and one of Sydney’s iconic eateries, combining quality fresh produce with authentic “casalinga” style cuisine and exceptional, familiar service.
On any given day you will still find Mario himself behind the counter, greeting his customers and masterfully cooking their pizzas in the first oven of its kind in Australia imported from Italy.
