Fontana occupies an upstairs space on Redfern Street reached via a carpeted staircase between two takeaway shops, taking over the former home of the neighbourhood restaurant Ron's Upstairs in 2022. The restaurant is run by chef Daniel Johnston alongside Ivey Wawn and Harry Levy, who previously operated a string of pasta-driven pop-ups across Sydney including Don Peppino's, Wilmer and Alfio's. The frequently changing menu draws on Italian regional cuisine, built around seasonal ingredients and a rotating pasta selection, including a well-regarded pasta e fagioli and a caramelised garlic bread, paired with a wine list favouring smaller-scale, environmentally considered producers. A small 60-seat bar welcomes walk-ins for those after just a drink and a snack, alongside table dining for a fuller meal. It's a genuinely independent, unpretentious take on Italian cooking in the heart of Redfern.
