Toddy Shop is a small, 20-seat South Indian restaurant tucked into a laneway off Smith Street in Fitzroy, named after the toddy shops found across Kerala, where locals gather to drink palm toddy and eat. Chef Mischa Tropp, whose family hails from Kerala, built the venue as an homage to that tradition, aiming for the warmth of walking into an extension of his own home. The homestyle menu is served on steel plates and centres on dishes such as fiery fish nadan, prawn moilee fragrant with coconut and curry leaf, and flaky parota bread, alongside daily-made dosas. Cocktails lean tropical, with drinks such as the Mango Marg mixing tequila, mango, ginger and lemon, served to a soundtrack of Bollywood beats. The cosy, warmly lit dining room suits a casual dinner, a group gathering or a date night.
