Kurumba brings food, culture and ambience together across a two-storey venue on Crown Street, Surry Hills, from the De Hoedt family who previously ran Dulwich Hill staples The Fold. Mum Dilki oversees front of house, dad Augi heads the kitchen, and sons Travin and Jason, alongside Travin's wife Saaya Takahashi, round out a genuinely family-run operation drawing on generations of Sri Lankan street food and recipes. Upstairs, the dining room spotlights traditional Sri Lankan dishes with a Sydney twist, including Sydney rock oysters, Western Australian lobster and smoked brisket, while downstairs the Hopper Bar pairs crepe-thin, coconut-milk hoppers with a carefully curated wine list. Kurumba means young coconut in Sinhala, an ingredient found throughout the menu, from sambols and curries to desserts crafted by the family's own pastry team.
