Essie Wine Bar opened in 2019 inside a heritage-listed former music school on Station Street, Malvern, directly opposite Malvern Station, the project of owner Angus Brettingham-Moore after years spent working across venues including Toorak Cellars and Franklin in Hobart. The wine list runs through local and international varieties and styles chosen to speak of time and place, paired with a mainly European small-plate food menu built for grazing rather than a full sit-down meal. In cooler months, guests can settle in beside the open fire in a cosy fireplace room seating up to 16, while the sun-filled courtyard holds up to 30 for warmer days, with larger private events available on request.
