The Pig & Whistle sits in the hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula, known locally as the pub amongst the wineries, and combines an English countryside tavern with an Australian bush retreat. Director and owner James McPherson took over in 2017 with a plan to blend arts and hospitality as equal, genuine parts of the same venture, and that vision built The Shed Theatre, a converted machinery shed hosting live concerts, cabaret, burlesque and comedy that now carries a six-month waiting list for touring artists. Tex Perkins, Katie Noonan, Brian Cadd and Ross Wilson have all played the venue, alongside upcoming acts like Ben Lee, Christine Anu and Meg Washington. The pub itself serves hearty British cuisine, including a well-regarded Guinness pie, alongside Australian pub classics, with beautiful gardens, a children's outdoor play area and beer garden picnic rugs rounding out the family-friendly side. Farmhouse accommodation upstairs doubles as a green room for touring artists, who sometimes wander down for breakfast the morning after a show. The venue also hosts regional events including the Great Aussie Hike, International Women's Day Festival and Vinehop Festival. Multiple spaces, including the Cellar Bar and Restaurant, cater for private functions. The property sits close to Peninsula Hot Springs, Cape Schanck lighthouse and dozens of wineries and breweries, making it a natural stop on a wider day exploring the hinterland.
