New Gold Mountain is a cocktail bar spread over the first and second floors of 21 Liverpool Street, up a flight of stairs from the lane on the edge of Melbourne's Chinatown. The name comes from the Victorian gold rush, when Chinese arrivals called Australia 'New Gold Mountain' and Little Bourke Street grew into a hub for Chinese merchants. The interior plays on that history, with old-world Shanghai glamour, low light, banquettes and a fire in the cooler months. Bartenders work through an inventive list of original cocktails built around Australian ingredients, alongside reworked classics, and will mix a straight classic on request. It opens from late afternoon Wednesday to Saturday and trades into the early hours on Friday and Saturday, which makes it a late-night option in the CBD. The space also takes private events for up to around 50 guests standing.
