Leonie Upstairs is a Japanese sake bar and restaurant hidden up a staircase beside Hareruya Pantry, overlooking Carlton's leafy Lincoln Square. The venue is named after Léonie Gilmour, who raised Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi, a story reflected in the minimal timber joinery and sculptural rice paper lightshades. Leonie Upstairs is known for Melbourne's largest temaki sushi selection, hand-rolled to order using fresh-cut sashimi, alongside dishes such as fried chicken wings and soft shell crab rolls. The sake list is extensive, curated with attention to female brewers, available as tasting flights or individual pours. Desserts include a theatrical kuri no pavlova finished tableside.
