Cripps Family Seafood
Description
Cripps Family Fish Farm traces back to 1874, when the Cripps family began fishing out of the remote village of Port Franklin, and the fourth generation, Vicki Maree Hamod, her son Hanna Hamod and sister Roslyn Holmes, still fish those same waters around Wilsons Prom and Bass Strait. After more than twenty years running restaurants, hotels and food businesses, the family opened their own sustainable fish farm on the Moorooduc Highway in Baxter, moving from simply cooking fish to farming it. Visitors can catch their own fish from the on-site ponds, with staff filleting and cleaning the catch on the spot, an activity aimed squarely at families and first-time anglers as much as experienced fishers. The farm gate seafood market sells fresh live crayfish, abalone and other seafood direct to the public, and the business also supplies fish to restaurants, cafes and stores across the region. For a beachside version of the same seafood, the family runs a fish and chip van on Frankston's Olivers Hill shoreline, open extended hours through summer and a shorter roster the rest of the year. Staff are qualified or studying to be fish farmers, and the operation holds full Fisheries Australia licensing, part of a genuine, four-generation commitment to sustainable fishing practices.
