The Clare Castle Menu

The Clare Castle is a Norman castle built in 1250 on a
small island on the River Fergus just south of Ennis,
Ireland. It was of such significance that in 1570 the
whole region was named County Clare after it.
Today the castle itself is mostly in ruins but the
adjacent small town of Clarecastle is thriving.
The Clare Castle, Port Melbourne was built in 1875
and when it first opened it was described in the
newspaper as “the finest establishment in the area.”
The present custodians of this fine old building
provide a direct connection to County Clare with
ancestors hailing from Cooraclare, a village only 30
miles from the Clare Castle. Settling in Queensland
four generations ago it wasn’t long before the love of
seafood generally and Moreton Bay Bugs in particular
became a way of life.
JB’s Moreton Bay Bugs were well known amongst
family & friends long before the more recent
generations made Victoria home and Bugs became a
menu item here at The Clare Castle.
It is this families fervent hope that with great food and
great service The Clare Castle, after almost 150 years,
can once again rightly claim the title as:
“The finest establishment in the area.”
