Yūgen Dining is a dramatic subterranean restaurant beneath Capitol Grand in South Yarra, spreading across two levels with an 85-seat dining room, cocktail bar and the suspended Golden Orb private dining space. Contemporary Japanese and broader Asian influences shape the menu under culinary director Stephen Nairn, with the food supported by sake, wine and cocktails designed for the late-night setting. A separate six-seat counter is home to Yūgen Omakase, where a multi-course menu is prepared directly in front of guests using seasonal produce and seafood. The experience combines Japanese technique with Australian ingredients and a more intimate pace than the main dining room. Yūgen Omakase received Two Hats for the fourth consecutive year in the 2026 Good Food Guide Awards, a distinction that reinforces the venue’s standing within Melbourne dining. Yūgen Dining opens Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm until late. The range of spaces allows it to move between dinner, drinks, private celebrations and business occasions without losing its restaurant focus.
