Haiku occupies a corner of Toorak Road in Camberwell, running as a Japanese-style brunch cafe through the day before shifting into Haiku Kuro, an izakaya service Thursday to Saturday nights. A large part of the menu draws on owner Reiji Honour's mother's home cooking, including okonomiyaki, a cabbage and spring onion pancake topped with Otafuku sauce, and a traditional teishoku breakfast of tamagoyaki, seasoned rice, miso soup and house-made pickles. Coffee comes from Industry Beans, supplemented by a rotating range of Japanese beans including Lilo Coffee Roasters from Osaka. Next door at 1159 Toorak Road, Haiku Future operates as a Japanese konbini-style grocer and takeaway counter, selling hot karaage chicken, onigirazu and Japanese snacks and drinks. The venue caters to private functions, corporate dinners and celebrations, and is a short walk from Hartwell and Burwood train stations.
