Description

Kumo Izakaya stands proud at the corner of Lygon and O'Connor streets in Brunswick East, housed within a heritage 1956 bank building whose vault was converted into the venue's sake store during the fit-out. Established in 2011 by Japanophile and sake specialist Andre Bishop, the eclectic Japanese design seamlessly blends industrial and Art Deco influences, honouring the building's original bones while introducing a modern, moody atmosphere. Contemporary Japanese pub-style dishes anchor the menu, from Japanese fried chicken and aburi salmon to more inventive plates such as cod roe pasta, octopus pepperoncini and deep-fried spaghetti sticks seasoned with nori. An 80-strong sake list, curated with San Franciscan sake master Tod Eng, sits alongside craft beer and Japanese whisky, reflecting the venue's foundational focus on drink as much as food. Private dining is now available for intimate settings, and the venue's name, meaning cloud, nods to its airy, open feel thanks to large street-facing windows.
