East Village Hotel, affectionately known to locals as The EVH, has occupied its Darling Street site in East Balmain since 1875, when it opened as the Commercial Hotel serving the peninsula's original run of eight pubs. After later stints as a greengrocer, bakery and, briefly in 2008, the Belgian Beer Cafe, the venue was renovated and renamed in 2011, and remains the only hotel left in East Balmain today. It's proudly pokie-free and dog-friendly, with a focus on craft beers, boutique wines and a broad menu spanning Mediterranean, European, Italian and Asian dishes to suit vegetarian and gluten-free diners alike. Just 100 metres, or a two-minute walk, from the East Balmain ferry wharf, and a single ferry ride from Barangaroo, the pub makes for an easy stop before or after crossing the harbour.
