Kahaani, meaning story in Hindi, has carved out an unexpected niche on Lygon Street, Carlton, a strip otherwise dominated by Italian restaurants, offering unconventional Indian cuisine from Head Chef Aseem Sood and business partner Kunal Bhardwaj. The unconventional approach handpicks select regions of India and their signature dishes, each representing a unique chapter in the country's culinary narrative, with authenticity and traditional recipes taking centre stage over more familiar butter chicken. Sharing-style dishes span crisp pani puri filled with tamarind sherbet and chickpea mash through to the fragrant ghar ka gosht, a rustic goat curry bursting with bold flavours and tender meat. A long, narrow dining hall with funky industrial lighting and exposed brick down one side gives the restaurant a moody, subdued atmosphere, ideal for a romantic dinner or a catch-up with friends, with the front window opening onto the street to let Lygon Street's evening buzz filter in.
